Wrestle With Jimmy

Sometimes the universe is great.

My thesis show happened and it was a resounding success! Thanks be to all who attended and those who came later to check out all the great work! It was absolutely amazing seeing everybody’s hard work up on the walls, a feat perhaps topped only by the wonderful feedback we all got.

Pictured above is my work on the wall/plinth/person! Needless to say, antics were had!

Here’s a print I did for the PRNT program exchange. This year, the the collection was called ‘There Is No “I” in PRNT’, which is amazing.

This piece is called ‘Modern Reading Sucks’ and is inspired largely by my dislike of acronyms. Acronyms, contractions and contemporary slang seem to be more and more odd little arrangements of letters. Almost every new product has some awful alphanumeric name (See The Automotive Industry), especially hi tech things. SMS and internet slang is all a few odd letters. I find so often that one needs to navigate a small sea of convoluted acronyms more so than any former semblance of the English language.
This piece is meant to embody those sentiments and confound the viewer.

Here’s a poster commission I did almost two months ago! It was a lot of work and a lot of fun!

I have got absolutely no time to try and read comics these days, but as soon as I do, I’m going to find me some Doctor Solar! Whatever fosters my fascination with Golden Age comics is completely requited with ole Doc Solar here.

What a neat character! I really don’t like a lot of modern comic book characters who’s powers involve shooting some kind of ‘energy’. X-Men often rely on their characters shoot ‘blasts’ of some nature, and it all strikes me as cheap and lazy. By comparison, Doctor Solar seems to have some interesting twists on the archetypical hero of the atomic age. Like loads of classic super heroes, he gleaned his powers from some radioactive experiment gone awry, BUT, after reassembling his body from the ether he’s totally radioactive now! Not only is he dangerous, he’s a hazard! His snappy and simple costume protects those around him from radiation poisoning. BUT HOW CAN HE DO GOOD WHEN HE IS INHERENTLY BAD!?!?!

I’m excited.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I buy Chinese food I really question how authentically Chinese it is. I know chicken balls, etc, were invented to appease ‘Western tastes’ but all this Asian fuse food confuses me. Is it meant to appeal more to Westerners? Is it composed of actual Asian cuisine? Because it seems more like a misinterpretation of Asian food.

Regardless of what I had for lunch recently, Mu Pan’s paintings are a really interesting fusion of Asian art. There’s elements of traditional Chinese scroll paintings, Ukiyo-e, manga and lots of modern and/or Western influences. His pieces featuring lots of tiny figures remind me medieval European tapestries like The Hunt of the Unicorn too. Especially in that each piece is meant to engage the viewer for an extended period of time while they work out the each piece tells.

Mu Pan talks about his own work in this oddly straight forward, but pleasantly insightful video: http://vimeo.com/32231844

Maybe Murakami’s influence has spread, is Superflat no longer exclusive to Japan? Maybe Murakami just saw it coming and some deranged mutant form has been clawing it’s way out of it’s subterranean fortress for ages!

I totally missed the boat on Donny Miller, but it seems the universe was looking out for me and included him in the latest Juxtapoz shortly after I found the above picture online. Beautiful People With Beautiful Feelings is on my Christmas list, so what if it’s March!

It’s like Bjork was possessed by Jim Henson’s ghost!

SO GOOD!
